Never Without Consent: James Bay Crees' Stand Against Forcible Inclusion into an Independent Quebec
Published in Paperback by ECW Press (January, 1998)
Author: Grand Council of the Crees
Average review score:

Understanding the Cree Love of the Land
I read this book for a Quebec Society course I have been taking at University. It has helped me understand the trials that the Canadian and Quebec governments have put the Cree people through for political and land gain. Let's not forget the economic gains that the Quebec government has made by using the James Bay Hydro electricity project for their own gain. The Cree are very eloquent in explaining thoroughly the political implications of the Quebec separatist government and their attempts to secede from Canada. It has helped me to put this subject into a better perspective. The Cree will not stand by and watch as their land is purportedly to be yanked away once again. Historically it has happened, but that is where the title of the book comes from "Never Without Consent" they have done their homework and after reading this well constructed book the government will not be able to displace the Cree. Thank you to the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Astchee) and the ECW Press.

They are among my most prized book possessions. The photography is fabulous and the writing is first class!

Out of the past : the Istanbul Grand Bazaar
Published in Unknown Binding by Arco Pub. Co. ()
Author: Burton Yost Berry
Average review score:

Collecting as a Passion and an Adventure
With grace, wonder and gentle humor, Burton Berry tells the story of how he became one of the 20th century's greatest collectors.

A career diplomat, young Berry was posted to Istanbul in 1928. He soon learned nearly everyone he met collected "something." Unable to afford the beautiful rugs, jewelry and daggars found in the Grand Bazaar, Berry chose to collect old towels - at the time, considered little more than worthless rags. Despite the sneers his "finds" drew, Berry persisted, caught up in the adventure of buying, making friends and learning about an exotic foreign culure. Eventually, he developed a passion for the items he collected, and became recognized as an expert on Turkish textiles, silver, gems and bronzes.

The black and white illustrations and photos (if only they were in color!) provide clues to the "Arabian Knights" atmosphere Berry found in the Bazaar, and the treasures he discovered there. Today, his collection is housed in the Art Institute of Chicago.

Petit Larousse Illustre Grand Format 2003 Edition
Published in Hardcover by French & European Pubns (July, 2002)
Author: Larousse Editorial Staff
Average review score:

A wonderful dictionary (and so much more)
I have used a previous edition of this book. That is why I just ordered the 2003 edition.

A 100% French dictionary with numerous illustrations in color. For example, do you want to know all the names of items on a boat/ship? It has a beautiful drawing with all the parts labeled.

This is a dictionary for the serious student of Français.

The second half of the dictionary is the "Proper Nouns". People and places.

Photographer's Guide to the Grand Canyon and Northern Arizona
Published in Paperback by Stackpole Books (January, 2001)
Author: Joseph K. Lange
Average review score:

Everything you need to know to photograph this area
This book is the third in the author's arsenal, and it is just as useful as the other two. The author is a wonderful photographer, just the images in the book would be worth the price, but the reader gets a lot more:
Detailed descriptions of where to go for the best shots, and the best times to go there. For some of the areas, you get a mile-by-mile log, and even some compositional suggestions. Even if one has been to these places previously, this book contains extremely valuable information for the serious photographer.

Politics, Markets, and Grand Strategy: Foreign Economic Policies As Strategic Instruments
Published in Hardcover by University of Michigan Press (August, 2000)
Author: Lars S. Skalnes
Average review score:

must read if interested in foreign economic policies
This is an eminently readable, and a persuasive account of the impact that military-strategic assessments have on foreign economic policies. The research seems carefully done, both from primary and secondary documents, and the author gives due consideration to alternative explanations. This is the only book I have seen that adequately describes the links between strategy and foreign economic policies with the broad historical sweep that this book has. It was particularly interesting in terms of the forces that shape foreign economic policies. For these reasons this book is a "must read" for anyone interested in the grand strategic role that foreign economic policies play.
